Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy Treatment

What is shockwave used for?

Shockwave therapy is used for pain relief, injury prevention and injury healing. It helps to increase blood supply to an area which enhances your body's ability to repair damaged tissue. It has been proven to increase blood supply, repair damaged collagen and boost growth factor which are all responsible for tissue healing and therefore pain reduction.

This list although extensive, is not complete and the research behind shockwave therapy Is continually developing. Shockwave therapy at flawless feet podiatry is most commonly used to treat plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy mainly because these conditions are the most commonly seen and diagnosed by podiatrists.

Can Shockwave Therapy Solve My Plantar Fasciitis & Achilles Tendinopathy Pain?

At Flawless Feet Podiatry & Laser Clinic, Extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT is offered to patients with Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendinopathy. Shockwave therapy is not always a stand-alone treatment which is why our experienced podiatrists will cater your treatment plan to suit your needs. Not everyone's journey is the same, your bespoke plan will be designed based on your injury, your desired activity levels, your occupation and your desired timeframe.

It is a great alternative to those who have not responded adequately to conservative treatments, such as physiotherapy, rest, steroid injection, ice therapy and painkillers. It is a minimally invasive treatment that is carried out in Clinic and can offer relief from pain and other symptoms.

How does it actually work?

Tendons are composed of cells called tenocytes, collagen, elastin, and other substances. Tenocytes are spindle-shaped and make up 5% of the tendon, they are responsible for maintaining and repairing the tendon. The tendon is mainly type I collagen, with type III collagen playing a crucial role in injured tendons and healing. Tenocytes can convert mechanical stimulation (the shockwave) into biochemical responses, which can lead to the maintenance, remodeling, or degeneration of the tendon by regulating specific genes.

In normal human cell cultures, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) significantly increased the release of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These levels peaked on day 2 and remained high until day 7. Vascular endothelial growth factor, which is stimulated by cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), plays a crucial role in forming new blood vessels and aiding the healing process.

Similar to other tendon treatments, ESWT works by increasing blood supply to the tendons.

Who cannot have shockwave therapy?

  •           Cancer patients
  •           Patients going through pregnancy
  •           Patients with lung tissue, or brain/spinal tissue in the treatment area
