Musculoskeletal Assessment in London

If you're experiencing lower limb pain or discomfort, a musculoskeletal assessment could be the key to understanding the underlying causes. This detailed and thorough evaluation checks for misalignments, injuries, overuse, and various conditions affecting the joints, muscles, and bones. Whether you’re dealing with conditions like Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, or other musculoskeletal issues, a musculoskeletal assessment can help diagnose the problem and guide you towards the most effective treatment.

At Flawless Feet Podiatry & Laser Clinic, we provide specialised musculoskeletal assessments at our clinics in Sydenham, Croydon, and Covent Garden to help you identify the root causes of your pain and discomfort.

What is a Musculoskeletal Assessment?

A musculoskeletal assessment is a thorough and in-depth evaluation that examines the body's joints, muscles, and bones to identify issues such as misalignments, injuries, or overuse. This assessment is crucial for understanding how your body's mechanics contribute to pain, restricted mobility, and discomfort, especially in the lower limbs.

This assessment involves both non-weight-bearing and weight-bearing evaluations, along with a detailed gait analysis. It is designed to give us a complete picture of your musculoskeletal health, allowing us to create a customized treatment plan to alleviate pain and restore function.

What Happens During a Musculoskeletal Assessment?

Our musculoskeletal assessment are thorough and personalized, taking into account your unique needs and medical history. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

Medical History Check

We begin by gathering your full medical history, paying special attention to any lower limb issues, injuries, or previous treatments you've had. This helps us understand your specific concerns and identify any patterns that may be contributing to your pain.

Non-Weight-Bearing Assessment

The non-weight-bearing assessment allows us to evaluate your joints, muscles, and limbs without the strain of supporting your body weight. During this stage, we will check for any pain, stiffness, and mobility limitations. This step is especially important for diagnosing issues related to joint function, such as arthritis or injury, and is useful for individuals who are unable to bear weight due to pain or disability.

Weight-Bearing Assessment

The weight-bearing assessment evaluates your posture, strength, and joint structure under minimal stress. By assessing your body in a standing position, we gain a better understanding of how your body functions when supporting your full weight. This is an essential part of diagnosing conditions that may be worsened by standing or walking.

Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is a crucial component of the musculoskeletal assessment, as it helps us evaluate your walking patterns. We observe and measure your body movements, mechanics, and muscle activity while walking. This can be done using various methods, including video observation, wearables, pressure sensors, or 3D motion capture systems that track joint and limb movement. Gait analysis allows us to identify issues such as abnormal walking patterns, misalignments, or muscle imbalances that may contribute to pain or discomfort.

Who is the Musculoskeletal Assessment For?

A musculoskeletal assessment is suitable for anyone experiencing discomfort or pain related to the lower limbs. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions such as:

 Achilles tendinitis
 Plantar fasciitis
 Knee pain
Metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot)
 Bunions
 Arthritis or joint pain
Symptomatic leg length discrepancies or misalignment
 Diabetic foot issues
Nail trauma or damage to the feet
Overuse injuries like stress fractures or shin splints

Even if you're not experiencing pain, a musculoskeletal assessment can help identify subtle imbalances that might cause problems in the future, ensuring you stay healthy and pain-free.

Why is a Musculoskeletal Assessment Important?

A musculoskeletal assessment helps identify underlying issues in your body that may be causing pain or dysfunction. By evaluating the way your body moves and functions under various conditions, we can uncover misalignments, weakness, or overuse problems that are affecting your joints, muscles, and bones. The key benefits of a musculoskeletal assessment include:

  • Identifying the root causes of pain
  • Whether you’re suffering from conditions like plantar fasciitis, knee pain, or shin splints, a musculoskeletal assessment helps identify the cause of your discomfort.
  • Early detection of imbalances
  • Even if you're not experiencing pain, imbalances or minor misalignments could lead to future injuries or discomfort. Early detection helps prevent long-term problems.
  • Customized treatment plan
  • Based on the findings, we create a personalized treatment plan that may include physical therapy, exercise rehabilitation, custom orthotics, or lifestyle changes to address your unique needs.
  • Injury prevention
  • By identifying and correcting musculoskeletal issues early on, you can prevent injuries and improve your overall performance, whether you're an athlete or someone with an active lifestyle.
  • Better movement efficiency
  • A thorough assessment helps improve your body’s movement mechanics, making walking, running, and other activities more efficient and less painful.

Customer Testimonials

Millie conducted a thorough investigation incl. an ultrasound scan and offered a firm diagnosis and treatment plan in only 30 mins. Whilst I would have preferred guidance on all of the aspects of treatment, I understand the limitations of an initial care plan. Ultimately I felt very reassured by Millie's expert advice about my foot issue.

My first appointment with Marta was fantastic. She was so helpful and informative. She explained what was happening with my feet, gave me treatment options and allowed me to think on them. I now have a treatment plan and know more about how to take care of my feet and what ill fitting shoes means for their health. Looking forward to my follow up appointment!

Flawless by name, flawless by nature... I had a double nail avulsion treatment for my big toes after suffering intermittently with infections. Marta was incredible, very knowledgable, professional and friendly, the aftercare was also top notch. They've now fully grown back with no issues. I would highly recommend them 100 times over... thank you Flawless Feet Podiatry & Laser Clinic.

I went to Flawless feet for the first time today & left feeling utterly relieved after having a painful toe for sometime & not understanding the reason. Marta was extremely professional, knowledgeable and welcoming and I left feeling so much better and confident about looking after my feet myself at home, following Marta's suggestions after receiving the treatment. I have booked for a check up in a couple of months & will be avoiding cheap nail bar pedicures in future! Thank you Flawless Feet!

After having tried a few others for foot treatment. Flawless were the first to fully put me at ease. Relaxed, friendly, informative and professional staff are worth their weight in gold. My only regret is not coming to them years ago.

I would highly recommend Flawless Feet. I had three treatments with Millie after suffering knee pain for three years. I had received physiotherapy, acupuncture and osteopathic treatment, all of which helped but the pain and absence of the full range of motion persisted. Millie successfully treated my knee and after three sessions, assessed me as not requiring further treatment. She made recommendations for suitable trainers amd provided me with additional exercises to the ones issued by a physio. I am happily pain-free now and the full range of mobility has been restored. I would recommend Millie very highly. I was impressed that she did not suggest I needed further treatment or unnecessary assessments.

I definetly recommend Flawless Feet in Sydenham. I have just finished my course of treatment and I felt totally cared for and comforted. The aftercare offered was excellent and Marta made me feel calm and in control throughout the whole procedure too.
